WE SPOKE TO A NUMBER OF THEM TODAY DURING THAT PROTEST AS THEY DELIVERED THAT MESSAGE OUTSIDE OF BALTIMORE, CITY HALL WAS ONE OF HUNDREDS OF PROTESTS THAT WE SAW ACROSS THE NATION. Demonstrators at Baltimore City Hall join nationwide Hands-Off protest
More than 1,000 people gathered Saturday outside of Baltimore City Hall for the “One Fight, One Future” Peace Rally.The rally was hosted by the grassroots organization that works to defend democracy, Free State Coalition Maryland in partnership with the national #50501 movement, Indivisible Baltimore and Hands-Off for the rally. “The beginning was really a protest about what we were fighting against,” said Jessica Davis, an organizer with the Free State Coalition. “This one is really what we’re fighting for. We’re fighting for community rights of humans, and citizens’ rights, and really just trying to to rally the people to be able to come together and build that resilience in the community.””We just got to understand one thing, among other things, and that is that there’s so many people like you across this nation, 1,000 rallies like this today,” said U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-District 7.Mfume also said he has a message for President Donald Trump: “Leave our Medicaid and Medicare alone, leave our Social Security alone, leave food programs for children alone, leave the Department of Education alone, leave women’s bodies alone. Understand over and over again that we will continue to rise up and continue to speak out.”U.S. Rep. Johnny Olszewski, D-District 2, and Sen. Well, he’s already forgotten all those people. He is standing up for Elon Musk and the billionaires of America, and he’s doing it at the expense of everybody else in America.”The Trump administration has said the reason for cuts are to downsize the government and help with efficiency. However, Kennedy said core functions will be preserved.”We have two goals. The first is obvious: to save the taxpayer money by making our department more efficient and the second is to radically improve our quality of service. I want to promise you now, we’re going to do more with less,” Kennedy said.
