Dead swans found in Christchurch field off Pulters Drove

The birds were discovered on farmland off Pulters Drove, in Christchurch, on Wednesday (October 29).

UK Power Networks, which maintains the power lines, said the incident was reported at 9pm and confirmed it is sending a team to the site tomorrow (October 31).

The team will assess the “most effective places” to install bird diverters before seeking permission from the landowner, a spokesperson said.

The spinning fluorescent discs hang from power lines, making them more visible to large birds with poor eyesight.

It comes after eighteen whooper swans were found dead underneath a powerline on farmland between Chatteris and Somersham in November last year.

UK Power Networks said it has installed a number of bird diverters in the Cambridgeshire fens over recent years.

In 2021, it installed more than 4,300 diverters on 22 kilometres of liver overhead cables across the East of England.

“Feeding grounds change every few weeks so it’s difficult to monitor the movement of the birds, but we work with local wildlife groups and conduct routine patrols.

“We are also exploring ways to reconfigure the network in Christchurch to reduce power cuts,” a spokesperson added.
