Wondering why you haven’t gotten any mail today? Arrive at the bank only to find it closed? Need to get a driver license today?
That’s because Monday, Oct. 13 is Columbus Day and Indigenous People’s Day, a federal and state holiday. Columbus Day recognizes Italian explorer Christopher Columbus making landfall in the Americas in 1492. It is celebrated each year on the second Monday of October.
The holiday means U.S. Post Offices are closed and mail won’t run today. Priority Mail Express is available 365 days a year.
Columbus Day is the eighth postal holiday of the year, following New Year’s Day (Jan. 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday (Jan. 20), Presidents Day (Feb. 17), Memorial Day (May 26), Juneteenth National Independence Day (June 19), Independence Day (July 4) and Labor Day (Sept. 1).
There are three more postal holidays this year: Veterans Day (Nov. 11), Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 27) and Christmas Day (Dec. 25).
UPS pickup and delivery services and UPS store locations are open; FedEx pickup and delivery services and offices are also available.
The holiday also means banks are closed but stock markets remain open.
Federal and state government offices, including courts, will be closed. Municipal closures will vary by location.
