China Unveils Sharp Shark 10 Armed USV at DIMDEX 2026

China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) showcased its Sharp Shark 10 unmanned surface vessel (USV) for the first time outside China at the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX) 2026, marking the platform’s international debut following receipt of export authorization from Chinese authorities.

The 12-meter vessel, displacing 10 tonnes, represents NORINCO’s new entry into the growing market for armed autonomous surface platforms. According to company representatives at the exhibition, the Sharp Shark 10 is not a conceptual design but a fully constructed platform currently awaiting procurement decisions from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (Chinese Navy).

The vessel’s primary offensive capability centers on a six-cell vertical launch system housing loitering munitions. While NORINCO officials declined to specify the munition type, they confirmed the system is designed to engage both land and maritime targets. This dual-role capability suggests the platform is intended for littoral operations where threats may originate from either domain. Secondary armament consists of a 12.7mm remote weapon station positioned forward, providing defense against small surface threats and aerial targets.

Propulsion is provided by twin waterjet units, enabling speeds exceeding 40 knots, though precise power output specifications were not disclosed. “The high-speed capability aligns with the vessel’s intended role in close shore operations, where rapid repositioning and quick reaction times are operationally valuable,” the company representative said.

Notably, the Sharp Shark 10 features two helipads capable of accommodating unmanned rotary-wing aircraft with wingspans up to two meters.

Company officials indicated the Sharp Shark 10 is being positioned for the PLA Navy’s littoral operations requirements, though no procurement timeline was provided. “The decision to showcase the platform internationally while still awaiting domestic orders is somewhat unconventional, possibly indicating confidence in the design or eagerness to secure export commitments that could support series production,” the company official noted.

The Sharp Shark 10 sits within a rapidly expanding category of armed USVs being developed by multiple nations. Its combination of VLS capability, high speed, and aviation facilities differentiates it from smaller reconnaissance-focused platforms, positioning it closer to the manned surface combatants despite its modest size.

The dual helipad configuration raises operational questions about deck cycle management and the practical utility of operating two UAVs simultaneously from such a compact platform. Whether this proves operationally advantageous or merely adds complexity will likely depend on mission profiles and the specific UAV types employed.

The vessel’s presence at DIMDEX is significant primarily because it indicates Chinese willingness to market the platform internationally. The recent granting of export licenses suggests NORINCO sees potential demand among regional navies seeking cost-effective solutions for maritime security missions that may not require larger manned platforms.
