China issues two warnings about US travel to its citizens, urging ‘caution’

China’s government on Wednesday issued two warnings to its citizens about travel to the United States, noting a deterioration in bilateral relations as the two countries slap hefty tariffs on each other’s imports.

“Due to the deterioration of Sino-US economic and trade relations and the domestic security situation in the United States, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism reminds Chinese tourists to fully assess the risks of travelling to the United States and travel with caution,” the ministry said.

The warning came shortly after Beijing announced it would impose additional 50 per cent tariffs on all American imports in response to a similar level of tariff increases on its goods from US President Donald Trump.

The tit-for-tat trade actions threaten to undo the normalised economic relations that has prevailed between the world’s two biggest economies for decades.

Beijing’s Ministry of Education issued a separate warning, citing a bill making its way through Ohio’s statehouse that contains “negative provisions related to China”.

Passed by the midwestern US state’s House of Representatives last month, the bill “contains negative provisions related to China and imposes restrictions on educational exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and American universities”.
