It wasn’t a question of if Team Chevy and Ilmor Engineering would win in 2025, but where it would take place and with the Bowtie’s longstanding mastery of Iowa Speedway, Saturday’s 1-2-3-4 finish in the Sukup 275 IndyCar race went like all the others since the series returned to the track in 2022.
Team Chevy started on pole with Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden, won with Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward, and led 268 of 275 laps amid the cornfields of Newton.
“Very happy for Team Chevy,” O’Ward said after earning his eighth win since graduating to IndyCar, all of which have come with Chevy at Arrow McLaren. “This was important and very deserving for Team Chevy. I’m glad it was an all-Chevy podium.”
The Mexican improved to second in the IndyCar championship with the victory and added to his record as Chevy’s best performer by far with his fifth podium for the Bowtie from 11 races. The only other Chevy-powered driver who’s close is teammate Christian Lundgaard with four.
O’Ward led home a lockout of the top four and seven of the top eight finishers use Chevy engines.
“Team Chevy did a great job,” said Newgarden, who took second and led a race-high 232 of 275 laps. “Finally (getting) a win for Team Chevy is a big deal. They should have had way more on the year, so good to finally get one.”
