Residents and tourists gathered in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui cheered and applauded as the Lunar New Year parade began on Wednesday night, with floats, performers and musicians helping the city usher in the Year of the Snake.
Undeterred by the cold weather, spectators lined the parade route hours ahead of the 8pm start time to secure the best spots.
As many as 100,000 spectators were expected for the Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade organised by the Tourism Board.
To warm up the crowds, a pre-parade street party featuring more than a dozen performances started at around 6.30pm, including dragon dancers, magic shows, rope-skipping and dances by children.
The parade features more than 50 local, mainland Chinese and overseas groups, with one highlight being the Mumbai-based V. Unbeatable Dance Group that rose to prominence as winners of America’s Got Talent in 2020.
