January is celebrated as the Cervical Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to information dissemination regarding cervical health and the preventive measures against cervical cancer and other reproductive health issues. For the unversed, a healthy cervix is important both for overall well-being and for fertility and lifestyle plays an important role in determining the cervical health of women. While some lifestyle habits can enhance cervical health and boost chances for conception, others can put it at a halt.
In an exclusive interaction with the editorial team of Onlymyhealth, our expert, Dr Suma Varsha, IVF Specialist, Ferty9 Fertility Center – Vijayawada, shed light on some essential tips to support a strong and healthy cervix. Here is what she shared with us.
1. Balanced Nutrition
A diet full of balanced nutrients is very important to the health of the cervix. Nutrients like folate, vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene contribute to the regeneration of cervical cells and strengthen the immune system. Dr Varsha highlighted that one of the best ways to boost fertility is consuming a balanced diet. Include the following in your everyday meal for effective results:
- Folates found in green leafy vegetables, beans, and citrus fruits prevent cervical dysplasia which is the early stage of cervical cancer.
- Vitamin C from berries, oranges, and bell peppers supports the immune system and aids healing.
- Beta-carotene found in carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach protects cervical tissue.
- Omega-3 fatty acids, which are located in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, decrease inflammation and maintain the balance of hormones.
2. Hydrate
Second up is proper hydration! Drinking enough water in a day helps ensure that the mucus of the cervix, which aids the sperm to swim efficiently in the reproductive tract, is healthy and produced adequately. “At least eight glasses of water a day would be the norm for proper production of mucus and reproductive health,” Dr Varsha explained.
3. Practice Safe Sex and Get Regular Screenings
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), such as Human Papillomavirus (HPV), can dramatically affect cervical health. HPV is the most common cause of cervical cancer, which is why frequent Pap smears and HPV vaccination are recommended. Additionally, here is what Dr Varsha recommended:
- Use barrier protection (condoms or dental dams) to avoid STIs.
- Schedule routine Pap smears and HPV tests, as recommended by your healthcare provider.
- Consider receiving the HPV vaccine if you have not done so already.

4. Regular Exercise and Healthy Weight
Regular exercise helps control hormones and has a positive influence on the immune system, factors important to cervical health. According to Dr Varsha, they also show that excess body weight, particularly around the stomach area, has been associated with elevated levels of estrogen and has been attributed to cervical complications.
Hence, at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as walking, yoga, or swimming, should be completed five times a week for optimal cervical and overall health.

5. Refrain from Smoking and Heavy Alcohol Use
Smoking is one of the most common risk factors for cervical cancer since it lowers the immunity of a person and, therefore, permits the persistence of HPV infections. Similarly, alcoholism can affect hormone levels and compromise the function of the immune system.
Experts warn you to stop smoking to reduce your chances of cervical cell abnormalities and limit alcohol consumption.
6. Manage Stress Effectively
Chronic stress negatively affects hormonal balance and the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight infections and reproductive health. If you are someone who is often stressed, use stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and getting proper sleep to positively impact your cervical well-being.
Bottomline
Your cervical health is a significant part of your overall reproductive health and fertility. With sedentary lifestyle choices, you will only increase the chances of cervical problems and decrease your likelihood of getting pregnant. Hence, this Cervical Awareness Month, take good time to focus on your health and make appointments for screenings so you are taking proactive steps toward your well-being. By making small but meaningful changes, you can take control of your cervical health and pave the way for a healthier future.
