The Brevard County school board is looking at a significant change to its policy for cell phones and communication devices. “Ultimately, they’ve become a huge distraction,” said Vanessa Skipper, vice president of Brevard Federation of Teachers.She said teachers cite cheating, organized meet ups, recording and distractions are just a few problems they’re having with phone use. “We have to remember the number one goal when kids go to school is to learn,” Skipper said.The Brevard County School Board is working on a policy that would go beyond the state’s new law banning phones in classrooms. A new state law will ban classroom devices for elementary and middle school students.The district says its restrictions will expand for all students. Cell phones need to be put away from the first bell of the day to the last.“So, we already provide our schools access to a laptop, so they don’t need wireless devices to do anything other than educational activities,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell.“I think it’s a really good idea because the kids don’t focus enough nowadays,” said parent David New.Parents like David New say he supports the ban and feel, if an emergency happens, there’s ways to contact key people.“The parent can always call the school if they need to get a hold of the kid,” New said. The district said a vote could be made on this change during their July 29 meeting.
