The Bremen City Schools Nutrition Program has been selected for the Healthy Meals Incentives Recognition Award for improvements in the nutritional quality of the system’s school meals.
Awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service in collaboration with Action for Healthy Kids, Bremen City Schools received the award for incorporating new menu items, prepared from scratch, using a local agricultural product or USDA food in accordance with USDA standardized recipe processes.
In a release, the school system said the program created and introduced chef-inspired menu items, while also keeping nutrition and presentation in mind. Bremen City Schools also said that the initiative, along with the staff using high quality ingredients, has helped to elevate the nutrition program to better serve the entire student body.
“We congratulate Bremen City Schools on this important achievement,” said Rob Bisceglie, president of Action for Healthy Kids. “The HMI Recognition Awards are an opportunity to showcase innovative school nutrition practices that provide children with access to nutritious school meals.”
As an award recipient, Bremen City Schools will receive national and local recognition and travel stipends to attend a national Healthy Meals Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Action For Healthy Kids said it recognizes school districts that have made improvements to the nutritional quality of their school meals as part of a cooperative agreement to develop and implement the USDA FNS’s Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative. The initiative also seeks to improve meal quality in schools by giving sub-grants.
