Salinas motorists be on the lookout for potential traffic impacts in the northern part of the city as work begins on the initial phase of the Boronda Road Congestion Relief Project.
Starting Nov. 18, according to a city announcement, crews will work day and night to install a multi-lane roundabout at the East Boronda Road and McKinnon Street intersection and undertake other related improvements from Dartmouth Way to a point east of McKinnon Street.
Work will start at 7 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, according to the city, and any lane closures will have flagging in place and take into consideration the McKinnon School bell schedule.
Daytime work will include: Surveying and staking, demolishing sidewalk and curbs, street repairs to prepare for the project, installation of temporary fencing, constructing berm and trenching and sewage and drainage work.
At night between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, crews will install safety railing, a temporary crash cushion system and patch sewage and draining work.
Additional work may be authorized outside of these days as needed.
Undertaken by Granite Construction, the project has 270 working days to complete the work (weather permitting).
Project will include more roundabouts, street improvements
The overall project will widen East Boronda Road into a four-lane roadway (two lanes at each direction), and install further multi-lane roundabouts at the intersections of El Dorado Drive, Natividad Road, and Independence Boulevard.
Additionally, the project includes the construction of buffered bike lanes, bus pullouts, sidewalks, ADA-compliant access ramps, street lighting and other improvements.
Project boundaries are from just east of Dartmouth Way to a point east of Independence Boulevard.
Further phases of the Boronda Road Congestion Relief Project are contingent on funding availability and obtaining all the necessary environmental permits.
