Gunmen have opened fire on Bondi beach

New South Wales Police have urged people to avoid Bondi Beach after shots were fired while a Hanukkah event was taking place, reportedly killing ten people

Ten people have reportedly been killed in an attack on Bondi Beach, where a Jewish event was being held.

New South Wales Police confirmed there have been multiple fatalities in the incident and that two shooters have been “neutralised” while the scene is being cleared of suspected improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Officers are yet to provide an update on the number of deaths, although local reports say at least ten people have been killed.

The incident happened while a Hanukkah event was being held at the beach. Officers say it is not known at this stage if the shooting is connected to event. A flyer for the event – named Chanuka by the Sea 2025 – says it was scheduled to start at 17:00 AEDT (06:00 GMT) on Sunday.

On a statement on X, NSW Police said: “Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach. However, the police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area.”

Hanukkah, also known as Chanukah, is an eight-day festival of light.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood told the BBC she is expecting to speak with her Australian counterpart later on Sunday about the incident.

She added: “I can fully understand the anxiety this might be causing people here at home about relatives over in Australia, but first and foremost, our thoughts must be with the victims of this attack in Australia and with with the Australian people as well.

“We will obviously watch closely as details emerge of what exactly has happened, and I’ll be talking to my Australian counterpart later on today.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing. Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected.

“I just have spoken to the AFP commissioner and the NSW premier. We are working with NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed.

“I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police.”
