High-level talks between the U.S. and China are expected to take place Friday ahead of the meeting between President Donald Trump and China’s leader Xi Jinping next week.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will meet with China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng–Beijing’s top economic official–at a summit in Malaysia. A spokesperson for China’s commerce ministry confirmed the meeting, adding that the two sides will engage in consultations on key issues in China-U.S. economic and trade relations.
That could include Trump’s recent threat to impose additional 100% tariffs on China from Nov. 1, as well as Beijing’s export restrictions on rare-earth materials.
