Pompeii originally charted in the UK single charts at number two in March 2013, but it has gone on to become one of the UK’s bestselling songs of all time, the UK Official Charts says.
A spokesperson for the Colchester Castle Summer Series said: “Over the course of more than a decade, Bastille’s distinctive sound and cinematic songwriting have connected with audiences across the globe like few other British bands in recent memory.
“Their chart-topping debut album Bad Blood – featuring the era-defining hit Pompeii, was the biggest-selling digital album of 2013, making Bastille the year’s biggest global breakthrough act.
“Following Bad Blood, the band released Wild World (2016) and Give Me The Future (2022), as well as Doom Days (2019), and the acclaimed documentary Bastille Re-Orchestrated.
“Their 2018 collaboration with Marshmello, Happier, has been streamed over 7 billion times globally, further cementing Bastille’s place as one of the most streamed and influential British bands of a generation.
“In 2023, the band celebrated a decade of Bad Blood with the release of Bad Blood X and a sold-out international tour.
“That same year saw a collaboration with multiple Academy Award and Grammy-winning composer Hans Zimmer on Pompeii MMXXIII, a powerful rework of their breakout hit that closed the BBC’s Planet Earth III.
“With over 13 million records sold, three UK No.1 albums, six UK Top 40 singles, and more than two billion video views, Bastille continue to be one of Britain’s most vital and forward-thinking bands.”
Eighties music star Billy Ocean will headline the Summer Series on August 20 and the BRIT award-winning artist Becky Hill will headline on August 22. Dance music icon Fatboy Slim is headlining the event on August 29.
There were eight Summer Series shows this year, with headline performances from The Smashing Pumpkins, Busted, Craig David, Tom Jones, Texas, and Madness.
Two festivals also happened, UB40 featuring Ali Campbell headlined reggae day festival Roots East, which Mr Campbell spoke to the Gazette about.
Meanwhile, Manchester group James headlined the Out of Time Festival.
Indie rockers White Lies spoke to the Gazette about their time in the city and supporting The Smashing Pumpkins.
