On the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet Sunday, stars of the small screen celebrated their achievements in television in a big way. With Alan Cumming (who won a BAFTA Award for his contributions to film and television in 2018) at the helm of the star-studded event, the BAFTA TV Awards honored must-see TV—just as the global arts charity has been doing for 70 years.
Broadcast from the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London, this year’s BAFTA TV Awards counted Richard Gadd, Marisa Abela, Nicola Coughlan, Billie Piper, Lolly Adefope, David Tennant, Martin Freeman, Toby Jones, Gary Oldman, Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, Sue Johnston, Katherine Parkinson, Monica Dolan, and Maxine Peake among the nominees.
Before the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet was even rolled out, the cast and crew of Baby Reindeer had a lot to be proud of: The Emmy- and Golden Globe–winning series headed into the evening with four nominations. Scottish actor Gadd’s Netflix series about a comedian’s experience with a stalker earned nods for best actor (Gadd), best supporting actress (Gunning and Mau), and limited drama. At April’s British Academy Television Craft Awards, the show won best director: fiction and best writer: drama, also being nominated for best editing: fiction and best sound: fiction.
Also in the running to take home a BAFTA TV Award (or more)? The Disney+ black comedy Rivals, which stars Tennant in the television adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s novel of the same name; Apple TV+’s Slow Horses; and ITV’s Mr Bates vs the Post Office.
Aside from showstopping fashion and moving acceptance speeches, the evening also offered a bit of musical entertainment. Jessie J performed “The Award Goes To”—her first television performance in six years—and Tom Grennan played a brand-new song, “Full Attention.”
