Recent reports from Europe points to German automaker Audi moving some vehicle manufacturing to the U.S. to avoid the newly-enacted tariffs by the Trump administration.
Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche are all part of the Volkswagen Group, which also sports other boutique brands such as Bentley and Lamborghini.
Audi’s Q4 E-tron electric SUV uses the same platform, known as the MEB-platform, as Volkswagen’s ID.4 electric SUV, which is built in Chattanooga. A switch to producing both products is possible, but doing so could have an impact on VW’s production.
Volkswagen workers, who voted to unionize and join the UAW in April of 2025, could also have an impact on the decision.
Road & Track reports that Audio CFO Jürgen Rittersberger says the company was set to introduce 10 models to the U.S. The production facilities for these models would be decided later this year.
Other automakers Mercedes-Benz (made in Alabama) and BMW (made in South Carolina) are said to be ramping up their U.S.-based production as well to help ward off tariffs.
