9 monkeys who died in Hong Kong’s zoo in 2 days had been infected with melioidosis, officials say
HONG KONG (AP) — Nine monkeys who died in Hong Kong’s oldest zoo in two days this week had been infected with an endemic disease, possibly after some digging work near their cages, officials said on Friday. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung said in a press briefing that the animals in the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens contracted melioidosis and the disease later caused them to develop sepsis. Yeung stressed that such infections typically occur through contact with contaminated soil and water and that there is generally no danger to humans from contact with infected animals or people. The nine monkeys included three members of a species listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Designers of the late Princess Diana’s wedding dress settle dispute over drawings of the gown
LONDON (AP) — The onetime husband and wife team who designed Princess Diana’s wedding dress have settled their dispute over the sale of the drawings for the gown. He had said the drawings, including those for Diana’s wedding dress, were put up for auction without his consent. The pair announced Friday that they had settled the case “amicably.” Terms of the settlement weren’t released.
‘Kindness’ influencers on TikTok give money to strangers. Why is that controversial?
A wave of influencers on TikTok and other social media platforms have started specializing in a trend they call “kindness content,” which usually entails recording a charitable act like giving money or goods to strangers in need. Creators like Jimmy Darts have millions of followers they encourage to crowdfund to raise money for their video subjects. But some critics find the content to be problematic, calling into question the ethics of recording strangers and people who are homeless, the lack of regulations these creators have to abide by and the profits the creators make off the millions of views they get online.

Polish zoo celebrates the birth of 4 Sumatran tigers, a critically endangered species
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Their birth was a guarded secret at first due to fears they may not survive. But now a Polish zoo is celebrating the arrival of four Sumatran tigers cubs, weeks after they were born. Sumatran tigers are critically endangered and their numbers have dwindled to around 400 in the wild. Officials at the Wrocław Zoo in the southwestern Polish city of Wroclaw said the cubs were born on July 22, but the zoo chose not to go public with the news until they could grow a bit, gain some strength and be vaccinated. Now each one is about double the size of a domestic cat and growing fast.

The company has already cut its forecast several times this year.

Mountain West commissioner says she’s heartbroken over turmoil surrounding San Jose State volleyball
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez says she is heartbroken over turmoil surrounding San Jose State volleyball this season. Four teams have canceled games against San Jose State: Boise State, Southern Utah, Utah State and Wyoming. None of the schools explicitly said why. Most Nevada players said they wouldn’t take the floor when the Wolf Pack are scheduled to host the Spartans on Oct. 26 even though the athletic department said it wants to play the match. The school says state law bars forfeiture “for reasons related to gender identity or expression.”
