Amazon App Store to shut down on Android within 48 hours

Amazon has confirmed that its App Store would no longer be accessible to Android users from August 20, 2025, onwards. While Fire TVs and Fire Tablets would continue using the app store, Android users have been urged to act fast, especially if they hold unspent Amazon Coins, the platform’s now-retired digital currency.

According to Android Police, “once no longer supported, apps downloaded via the Amazon Appstore will not be guaranteed to operate on Android devices.” That means no support, which not only risks apps becoming “highly unstable” but also means any security vulnerabilities will not be patched. Users need to delete apps installed from Amazon’s store to ensure security. If apps remain on phones in an unsupported state, they might put data at risk.

Amazon also confirmed it would be discontinuing the Amazon coins program on the same date. Any unspent balance will be refunded following the cutoff date but only if payment details are up to date. Amazon has said affected users will receive instructions to update their payment information but those emails are easy to miss.

In order to avoid missing out on their refund, users need to log in to their Amazon account through their desktop or mobile browser — since the App Store might be unreliable at present — and check their balance. They then need to update their credit or debit card details to ensure their refund gets credited.

According to Forbes, it is recommended that Android users stick to Play Stores for apps since it remains the “best bet” when it comes to security safeguards, and works in tandem with Android’s core OS and the Play ecosystem that underpins it. This includes Play Protect which protects phones from dangerous apps, regardless of the source.

The shutdown of Amazon App Store for Android users showcases the company’s shift from competing with Google Play on Android devices. Instead, it is choosing to focus on its controlled Fire ecosystem, where it can lock in customers and monetize more effectively.

The App Store remains critical for the Fire products, which have sold over 40 million units globally in 2024, according to IDC estimates.

The Amazon App Store was first launched in 2011 with ambitions to challenge Google Play and position Amazon as a heavyweight in mobile software. It offered perks like a free daily app, competitive developer royalties, and the Amazon Coins incentive program. However, it failed to crack a significant market share, and Google’s Play Store remained the default option for most users. By 2022, Appfigures data showed Amazon Appstore downloads had fallen below 1% of the global app market.
