Amazon, Roblox, Snapchat, The New York Times’ Wordle and dozens of other websites and apps are down at the same time.
Downdetector shows disruptions began at around 7.30am, with hundreds of people saying apps are not working.
Other apps with reported outages include banking services Lloyds and Halifax, phone companies EE and Vodafone, video game Fortnite and the video chat app Zoom.
Many of the applications operate on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud computing platform that lets people ‘rent’ servers without the need to buy physical computers or data centres. Two in 10 websites use AWS.
Duolingo says the language learning app is undergoing a ‘maintenance break’, while Worlde asks users to: ‘Please try again later.’

Amazon give update
The AWS Health Dashboard has issued a new statement on the outage.
Amazon said one of its data centre regions – a group of computer servers that run apps – in Northern Virginia, called ‘US-EAST-1’, is seeing ‘error rates’.
US-EAST-1 is the second-cheapest data centre region offered by Amazon, according to CloudPrice.
Amazon said: ‘We can confirm significant error rates for requests made to the DynamoDB endpoint in the US-EAST-1 Region. This issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region as well.
‘During this time, customers may be unable to create or update Support Cases. Engineers were immediately engaged and are actively working on both mitigating the issue, and fully understanding the root cause. We will continue to provide updates as we have more information to share, or by 2:00AM [PDT].’

IMDb, the movie and TV show database, is empty.
All sections simply state: ‘Sorry, there was an error loading the page.’
How many websites use AWS?
AWS is the world’s biggest cloud provider, with 23% of the internet’s top million websites using AWS, according to BuiltWith.
In total, nearly 77,000,000 websites rely on Amazon, the web technology information profiler tool says.
Banks join growing list of outages
More than 6,500 people are struggling to access Lloyds, according to Downdetector.
Halifax customers are also seeing trouble, with more than 3,600 outage reports.
Is Duolingo down?
While Duolingo users are reporting that the app is down, according to Downdetector, the app’s status webpage says: ‘All systems operational.’
This applies to Duolingo, its English test and the version of the app for schools.
What has Amazon said?
Many of the websites and apps which have been knocked out use Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The platform is a big collection of online tools and servers, allowing companies to rent computing power, storage and databases.
The AWS Health Dashboard says there is an ‘operational issue’ in Virginia that means servers are running slower or seeing hiccups.
‘We are actively engaged and working to both mitigate the issue and understand root cause,’ it said at about 8.50am.
‘We will provide an update in 45 minutes, or sooner if we have additional information to share.’
It said the issue lies with DynamoDB, a database that stores apps and websites, according to Amazon.
