‘Amazing’: Hong Kong’s Lunar New Year fireworks dazzle huge crowds

Lunar New Year fireworks light up Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong

Gasps and cheers rippled through the crowds who gathered to watch Hong Kong’s Lunar New Year fireworks celebrating the Year of the Snake on Thursday night.

Police said that more than 259,000 people watched the display from both sides of the harbour, down from last year’s 338,000.

Shenzhen tourist Ye Fang, who came to Hong Kong with her two children specifically for the display, called the show held on the second day of Lunar New Year “amazing”.

“We waited for three hours, but it was all worth it. The children loved it too!” the 36-year-old clerk said.

Tourist Ye Zi, also from Shenzhen, said her favourite moment was the final scene where the fireworks mimicked snakes and the way they moved.

“We made a day trip for this. We can only light small fireworks in Shenzhen and not of this scale,” the 35-year-old finance worker said.
