Adenegan thrives off race for silver after clinching third Delhi medal

Cockroft hails ruthless 800m triumph as proudest New Delhi performance

The Coventry wheelchair racer, 24, completed a hat-trick of silvers in the T34 800m but didn’t have it all her own way at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

As British teammate Hannah Cockroft claimed a third Indian gold and 19th world title, Adenegan and Chinese athlete Lan Hanyu were locked in a tight tussle behind.

And it was Adenegan who won it, crossing the line in a season’s best time of 2:03.91 to win an eighth World Championship medal.

The West Midlands star said: “That was a really fun race – I didn’t know what to expect coming in here.

“That was the first time in a long time I’ve had someone right on me for the majority race.

“Me and my coach had a plan and the plan worked – I had quite a bit left for a kick at the end, which seemed to open a bit of a gap.

“It’s tough getting ready for the 800m after the 100m, but it was a fun race.

“We had a think about what type of sessions can work, because it’s quite a tight turnaround.

“It’s all about the training you’ve done months and months before, so I was just trusting that I had something left to give in this race, which I did.”

Adenegan is one of over 30 British athletes out in the Indian capital, with the team now sponsored by official finance partner Novuna.

After a season where her races have been limited as she has juggled her career on the track with a teaching qualification, Adenegan can take huge pride from departing the sub-continent with three more major medals.

She clocked season’s best times in all of her 100m, 400m and 800m races and is relishing the prospect of getting more time on the track next season.

“I’m really pleased – to get three more silver medals here is amazing, and just to be here and to represent my country,” she added.

“To get season’s bests in all my races is great – reflecting on the races I know I made a lot of improvements over the last few months.

“Hopefully next season will be a more full season and I’m really excited to see what happens.”
