Power of social media: How a post turned ‘Puppy Mountain’ into a must-visit attraction in China

Puppy Mountain is a perfect example of the power of social media. Talking about this cute mountain in China, it resembles a puppy’s head and has become a popular tourist destination. This mountain is set along the Yangtze River in Yichang, a city in Hubei province in central China.
Though the mountain has always been there, it gained attention recently thanks to a viral social media post.
About the viral post
The post that went viral was shared by a Shanghai-based designer Guo Qingshan. He is the one who brought this hidden treasure into the spotlight. During his vacation, the designer shared a photo on Valentine’s Day. The mountain appears to have the shape of a dog’s head, lying next to the river with its snout resting in the water. The post went viral in no time soon after being shared on Weibo, China’s largest social media platform.
Within 10 days, the post received much love in the form of over 120,000 likes. The hashtag #xiaogoushan, meaning “Puppy Mountain” in Chinese, also accumulated millions of views, further boosting the mountain’s popularity.
Soon after Guo’s post, other people also started sharing their own photos of the mountain. Some of these were taken before social media attention. Several also commented that they had never noticed the resemblance to a dog until they saw the viral post. Some also reflected on how the appearance of the mountain has changed over the years, possibly due to natural erosion and other geographical reasons.

China

Local resident Shi Tong shared his own experience, revealing that he had visited the location before. After seeing the Puppy Mountain post online, he realized he had already been there in 2021 and noticed the shape of the mountain resembling a dog at the time. This led him to post a photo of his previous visit, joining the growing trend of people recognizing the mountain’s dog-like appearance.
The viral popularity of Puppy Mountain has drawn attention to this scenic spot, turning it into a must-visit location for tourists and social media enthusiasts alike. It is also one of the best examples of how social media can turn a place or people into a hero or zero.
