Commissioners Approve Facility Use Agreement with Red Cross, Including Pet Provisions | Local News

{KXLG – Watertown, SD} The Codington County Commissioners have approved a Facility Use Agreement and Pet Addendum with the American National Red Cross. The agreement will allow the Codington County Extension Complex to be used during emergencies.

Emergency Management Director Andrew Delgado and Facility Manager Steve Molengraaf presented the agreement to the Commissioners. Delgado explained that the agreement details the terms of use, including points of contact and the types of expenses that may be reimbursed. There is no fee for the Red Cross to use the facility, but any costs beyond typical utilities such as water, gas, and electricity may be reimbursed with supporting documentation.

The agreement includes a pet addendum, which outlines provisions for pets’ presence during emergencies. Leashes or carriers must secure pets to ensure they are manageable within the facility.

Commissioner VanDusen made a motion to approve the agreement, which Commissioner Johnson seconded. The motion carried with all commissioners voting in favor.

During the discussion, the importance of having a plan in place before any incidents occur was emphasized. The facility became eligible for Red Cross use after the installation of a sprinkler system, which brought it up to the required standards.

Moving forward, the agreement is expected to be reviewed annually, with inspections conducted to ensure continued eligibility. Delgado will serve as the primary point of contact for this agreement.

Commissioner Troy VanDusen expressed appreciation for the partnership with the Red Cross, highlighting the foresight and preparedness that this agreement represents.
