It’s no secret the holidays hold landmines for those trying to eat healthy.
During the holidays most people don’t want to miss out on opportunities to eat special foods they don’t often get to eat other times of the year.
Family physician and UAB Asst. Professor Dr. Joseph Coppiano says it’s ok to enjoy food.
“For the holidays this is a time to celebrate,” Dr. Coppiano said, “So I think as long as you are planning ahead making this a special occasion that’s okay. That’s being human.”

For those who want to stay healthy, here’s what you can do when navigating the holiday eating scene:
Make a plan: Don’t starve yourself. Eat light before you go. Because if you don’t you’re setting yourself up to overeat.
Bring the healthy dish:
“Maybe say I’ll bring like some fruit or I’ll bring the stuffing and in the stuffing you can use whole wheat bread for example,” Dr. Coppiano said.
Survey the scene: Try small amounts first, rather than filling up your plate.
Choose carefully: Add fruit & veggies to your plate and cut desserts in half.
Practice mindful eating: savor your bites rather than eating quickly.
Be prepared to fend off food pushers:
“So if you already know you kind of have a family that likes you to have seconds or thirds or have a lot go on your plate, start light. You kind of have to play the game a little bit so maybe don’t go in and fill the plate. Get talking I think that’s the key too. A quiet table, is a table that’s going to over eat,” he said, “Try to get them chatting so they’re not focusing too much on your plate.”
Another way to stay healthy during the holidays is to go for a walk after you eat.
