Hong Kong Observatory will issue a No 1 signal on Monday morning as Super Typhoon Man-yi edges closer, while warning that the weather is expected to remain windy and temperatures will fall to 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 Fahrenheit) or below later this week.
“Tropical Cyclone Man-yi will enter within 800km [497 miles] of Hong Kong around midnight … The Observatory will issue the standby signal No 1 between 6am and 9am on [Monday],” the forecaster said.
The warning is issued when a tropical cyclone is centred 800km away from Hong Kong and likely to affect the city.
The Observatory said that while Man-Yi was expected to gradually weaken, it would be windy over the coast of Guangdong on Tuesday as the storm edged closer under the combined effects of a northeast monsoon.
“Whether a higher tropical cyclone warning signal will be issued between Monday night to early Tuesday will depend on the distance between Man-yi and the Pearl River Estuary, its change in intensity and the change in local wind conditions,” it said.
The forecaster earlier said it expected the storm to go from super typhoon to a typhoon on Monday before becoming a severe tropical storm by the next day, when it was centred 400km from the city.
Man-yi would then become a tropical depression on Wednesday as it moved away from Hong Kong, it added.
