Andrew Douglas said Hong Kong wanted to make Kai Tak Sports Park “a home and a fortress”, after his side swept away Brazil on a torrent of “ambitious” and courageous rugby on Saturday.
The South Americans, too physical and clinical for Hong Kong only seven days earlier, were cut down to size, as Hong Kong sparkled under wet, leaden skies for a 38-17 victory that sealed the two-Test series, 48-40 on aggregate, following a 23-10 loss last week.
In the second event at the 5,000-seat Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground, following a third-tier football match last month, Hong Kong slipped from 10-0 in front to 12-10 down following two Brazil tries inside three first-half minutes.
Unlike the first Test, however, when Brazil took charge after overturning an early deficit, head coach Douglas’s side, relishing the slick, wide hybrid surface, outwitted their increasingly stretched opponents to score three excellent second-half tries.
A partisan home support of more than 2,500, after 3,000 tickets were sold, roared their approval.
“The key point this week was our ambition, we weren’t very ambitious last week, and Logan Asplin, our attack coach, emphasised that we had to try things,” Douglas said.
