China Merchants Ports grows container volumes by 4.5% in first half of 2026

China Merchants Ports handled 78.3 million TEUs during the first half of 2026, an increase of 4.5% compared with the same period last year, according to DynaLiners.

Terminals in Greater China handled 58.64 million TEUs, up 5.5%, accounting for 75% of the group’s total throughput.

Container volumes in mainland China increased 6.4% to 56.19 million TEUs. However, throughput in Hong Kong declined 8.9%, while Taiwan recorded a 24.9% decrease.

Overseas terminals handled 19.64 million TEUs, up 1.6% year-on-year.

The strongest overseas growth came from Hambantota in Sri Lanka, where volumes increased 81.1% to 326,000 TEUs.

Other terminals reporting growth included Ambarli in Türkiye (14.6%), Paranagua in Brazil (4%), Djibouti (3.6%) and Lagos in Nigeria (1.2%).

Container volumes declined at Colombo, Togo, and Jakarta, while Taiwan recorded the largest drop within the group’s portfolio.
