New Jersey has one of the highest median household incomes in the nation, but some college degrees tend to get residents a much bigger paycheck than others, new data shows.
New Jersey residents with college degrees made a median income of $91,761 in 2024, U.S. Census data shows.
But income varied widely based on what residents majored in during their college years. (See a full list in the chart below.)
Engineering majors make the most money in New Jersey, with a median income of $122,346, according to the Census data. Computer science majors come in second, with a median income of $114,736.
That’s much higher than what the lowest earning major earns. Those with visual and performing arts degrees can expect a median income of $70,061 in New Jersey, according to the data.
Education degree holders didn’t make a lot more than that. The median income for those with education degrees was $71,790 statewide.
The U.S. Census data includes earnings from all degree-holders who are older than 25, not just recent graduates.
If those engineering majors really want to see big paychecks, they’d do well moving to Washington state. Engineering degree-holders make a median income of $141,112 in that state, according to the Census.
People who majored in computers, mathematics and statistics and live in Washington state had the highest median income in the nation at $150,685, the data shows.
What’s so special about Washington? It’s home to major hubs for several large tech companies, including Amazon, Microsoft and Boeing.
