As tensions brew in Greenland between residents in favour of Americanisation of the country and a Trump takeover – one local has warned it’s on the brink of a ‘civil war’
A Greenland resident has issued a chilling warning to the UK as he backs Trump’s campaign for a US takeover of the Danish country, and claims the country is on the “brink of civil war.”
Jorgen Boassen, a 51-year-old bricklaying company boss and self-described “revolutionary,” is just one of a handful of campaigning for the US to take over their country.
Boassen proudly champions “Make Greenland American”, but claims his activism has cost him his relationship with his fiancée and daughter
While the US President insists the move would help bolster security and be a simple process for his nation to do, he has faced a fierce backlash. Greenland’s defiant Prime Minister has defiantly slammed the world leader for his “bullying tactics“.
With less than 60,000 residents, Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and strategic importance for NATO and the EU. But internal tensions are reaching a breaking point. Boassen admits his in-laws “despise” his campaign for pro-US stance, and alleges his partner was fired from her role of 30 years with Air Greenland, a Danish carrier, soon after he attended MAGA events to celebrate Trump’s inauguration in Washington.
Boassen says there’s a “climate of fear”, with families being ripped apart and brawls breaking out in bars . He told the Daily Mail: “My bricklaying company has closed because people have blacklisted it, and the same thing is happening to other businesses who show support for Trump. I’m staying in Copenhagen for now because people back home are afraid to associate with me. That’s how it is in Greenland now. Those who really want the Americans to take over dare not speak out. There is a climate of fear.”
Boassen said that he thinks a civil war could happen in Greenland as the “tension is so great”. He added: “‘The Danes control 95 per cent of all the businesses here, and they are hunting down people like me with independent dreams of working with America.”
Warning of bloodshed, he noted that there is enough armoury for conflict as “almost every home has a gun for hunting”. He issued a direct warning to the PM: “So, I say to the EU and the UK – to Sir Keir Starmer – before you step in, you should be very careful, and you should know the truth about Denmark: they are repressing our people.”
While Denmark and Greenland maintain that the island isn’t for sale, the row has cast a shadow over US-Europe relations, with Denmark’s prime minister warning that a US takeover could spell the end of Nato.
Sir Keir Starmer “set out his position on Greenland” during a phone call with Donald Trump on Wednesday evening, Downing Street has said. The Prime Minister has repeatedly said Greenland’s future should be decided by Greenland and Denmark alone, including in the Commons earlier on Wednesday.
