A wrong-way crash on US-131 in Allegan County killed three people and critically injured three others.
WAYLAND, Mich. — A tragic wrong-way crash on US-131 in Allegan County claimed the lives of three people and left three others with life-threatening injuries.
According to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and officers from the Gun Lake Tribal Police Department were dispatched after reports of a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of US-131 near 129th Avenue in Wayland Township.
A Gun Lake Tribal Police officer, driving in the southbound lanes, located the wrong-way vehicle near mile marker 59 and attempted to intercept it. Before the officer could intervene, the vehicle collided head-on with a northbound car near mile marker 57 in Martin Township.
The female driver of the wrong-way vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver and a male front-seat passenger in the other vehicle were also killed. Three additional passengers in that vehicle sustained critical injuries and were transported to area hospitals.
Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved, pending notification of family.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team is leading the investigation. At this time, it is unclear whether alcohol played a role in the crash.
US-131 was closed for several hours following the incident but has since reopened.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Michigan State Police, Plainwell Department of Public Safety, Wayland City Police, local EMS units, several area fire departments, the Allegan County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The investigation remains ongoing.
