As the government shutdown continues, a South Pittsburg business owner and her team are rolling up their sleeves to make a difference in their community.
“Sometimes it isn’t about how much parents make. Sometimes it’s not enough, and if we can step in a do a little part to help out everybody or at least the kids to not go hungry, that’s a step in the right direction,” said Marco Cole, with Yum Yum’s Takeout Cafe.
Brittney Garrett owns Yum Yum’s Takeout Cafe in South Pittsburg and Marco Cole helps her run the business.
Wednesday, they packaged up chili dog meals to hand out to people who are struggling to put food on the table.
Garrett says lawmakers need to agree on a budget.
“My care is about these kids going hungry. Get it together. The kids shouldn’t have to go through this just because y’all got whatever y’all got going on,” said Garrett.
Wednesday’s chili dog bags are just the start of what Garrett is planning to do to help.
On Sunday, November 2, she plans on serving plates to those affected by the government shutdown.
Garrett says her mission is personal.
“This is personal just because I was a kid brought up on SNAPS. Food stamps. I was a kid raised on that. And I think anyone who was raised like that, it should hit home to them,” said Garrett.
She’s using Facebook to spread the word.
“To see everybody reach out and want to be a part of this, it’s overwhelming. Like I can’t say ‘thank you’ enough, because this what it should be,” said Garrett.
Garret says she does have some requirements. She does require an EBT card and a matching ID.
If you are interested in getting a free plate, Yum Yum’s will be offering the meals on Sunday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and again on Thanksgiving.
