OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – It’s through listening and studying music that James or “boby” can just be himself.

It can also help when dealing with the loss of his parents. Though he can’t always verbalize it, he’s still grieving.

“He wasn’t able to articulate our hurt, our mourning but all his actions show that we have those conversations because I know that he can understand me,” says James’ sister, Nia Dorsey.

James was born with down syndrome. His sister Nia is now his legal guardian, allowing him to gain further access to the care he needs.

“It has really allowed me to bring everything full circle because as a caregiver there were things that I didn’t know, things that I’ve learned being a guardian for James,” says Dorsey.

It’s also allowed Nia to help give James more opportunities. Nia, along with her husband, are the owners and CEO of Capture Development and Community Services, which specializes in providing support for individuals with intellectual disabilities, youth that are state wards, and youth on probation.

Through a friend, James has now been chosen to be a part of the largest down syndrome fundraiser in the world.

“Jill Rotella reached out and that’s how we found out about this event that’s coming up,” says Dorsey.

This year, he’ll strut down the runway in this year’s Global Down Syndrome Foundation’s Fashion Show in Denver. All the funds go towards raising awareness of the disparity of funding for down syndrome.

“This is really going to give him something to celebrate, something to look forward to,” says Dorsey.

It gives young people like James, a chance to be celebrated for his abilities.

“He is so loveable he is the sweetest kindest, it makes me emotional, person you are ever going to meet,” says Dorsey.

The “Be Beautiful, Be Yourself” Fashion Show for the Global Down Syndrome Foundation is happening this Saturday in Denver. Now in its 18th year, the event has raised more than $30 million dollars since 2008.
