German football baffled as Bayern Munich 'gift' Kusi-Asare to Fulham

Bayern Munich face allowing young prospect Jonah Kusi-Asare to slip through their hands to Fulham this season.

Kusi-Asare has joined Fulham on a season-long loan amid claims of broken promises and the permanent option which has left many in Germany baffled.

Sky Deutschland’s Kerry Hau reported on the podcast ‘Mia san vier’ that Kusi-Asare was “told in mid-August that he should block all loan offers and that they were planning with him in mind”.

According to Hau, the youngster was seen as a backup for Harry Kane (32), and “would then continue to get minutes”.

In the end, those promises were broken. Kusi-Asare himself was apparently perfectly fine with the substitute role and “actually didn’t want to leave”, according to Hau: “Then the topic of Nicolas Jackson came up, then rumours of further signings for the attacking side arose – and then, just a few days before the transfer window closed, the sporting authorities informed the player that he was free to look for a new club.”

As The Times reported, the loan fee is three million euros, but is reduced to zero if Kusi-Asare gets significant playing time. Such a clause makes sense if the selling club wants to reward the development of its players, but in that case, it would be wise not to grant a purchase option.

Fulham, however, has such an option. If things go well for Kusi-Asare in England, the striker will remain on the Thames for a manageable twelve million euros, and Munich won’t receive an additional loan fee.

Even though Bayern secured a buy-back option, it’s still left Hau stating there’s “no real plan behind it”.
