UK heatwave coming with temperatures to rise above 30C

A heatwave was already predicted to hit the UK in August last month, with it now confirmed that temperatures will exceed 30C in some parts of the country tomorrow, August 11.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tom Crabtree said: “Warmth is the focus in the forecast in the first half of this week, with temperatures likely to peak on Tuesday around the mid-30s, but remaining above average in the second half of the week, particularly further to the southeast.

“The exception to the widely warm conditions will be northwest Scotland on Monday, where showers will be more frequent. Warmth will develop there from Tuesday with temperatures peaking in the mid to high 20s.”

The Met said the heatwave, which is the fourth so far this summer, will be caused by “a combination of high pressure and a southerly airflow”.

Temperatures will reach “in excess of 30°C for some on Monday and likely peaking towards the mid-30s in London on Tuesday”, the Met said.

What is a heatwave?

The Met Office’s heatwave criteria specifies that a heatwave is an “extended period of hot weather relative to the expected conditions of the area at that time of year”.

The heatwave threshold in the UK is when a location records a period of at least three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold.

The threshold varies by UK county, with the South East of England being around 27 or 28C.

The record-high temperature for the UK was 40.3C which was recorded in Coningsby in Lincolnshire on the July 19, 2022.

This was during an “unprecedented heatwave”, with the previous record of 38.7ºC provisionally met or exceeded at 46 stations.
