The launch of the Allianz Partners Travel Index 2025 provides a deeper look into the evolving travel landscape for Hong Kong residents, shedding light on their changing travel preferences and concerns. Conducted in partnership with Kantar Consumer Link, the survey of 500 Hong Kong respondents presents valuable insights into how travelers are adapting to financial constraints, personal safety concerns, and shifting travel habits. Despite some challenges, the report reveals a resilient passion for travel in Hong Kong, with increasing demand for protection through travel insurance and a growing trend towards shorter, spontaneous vacations.
Travel Enthusiasm Amid Financial Challenges
Financial constraints have become a significant factor shaping the travel behaviors of travelers across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Allianz Partners’ survey indicates that 81% of APAC travelers cite financial limits as their primary reason for not traveling, a sentiment shared by 78% of respondents in Hong Kong. Yet, despite these constraints, an overwhelming 90% of Hong Kong residents still plan to travel in 2025, showcasing an unyielding desire for exploration, rest, and cultural experiences.
Retail therapy has also emerged as a key motivator for travel in Hong Kong, surpassing other regions, as travelers increasingly seek shopping experiences as part of their vacations. This reflects an ongoing demand for personal enjoyment, relaxation, and cultural indulgence, even in the face of economic challenges.
Rising Travel Concerns in Hong Kong
As travel behaviors continue to evolve, so do the concerns associated with traveling. For Hong Kong residents, personal safety, risk management, and health-related worries are at the forefront of travel planning. The Allianz Partners Travel Index found that 53% of travelers now prioritize personal safety when planning their trips, with 52% expressing concern about extreme weather conditions and 53% worried about falling ill while abroad.
These heightened concerns indicate a significant shift in priorities, pushing travelers to take more proactive steps in managing risks. Notably, the fear of losing travel documents has risen sharply in Hong Kong, with 43% of respondents citing it as a major concern—well above the APAC average of 31%. This shift in concerns highlights the growing need for comprehensive travel insurance, with 90% of respondents agreeing that purchasing insurance is essential for ensuring peace of mind during their travels.
Social Media’s Growing Influence on Travel Planning
The influence of social media on travel planning continues to grow, especially among Hong Kong travelers. The survey found that 50% of respondents now turn to social media platforms for travel inspiration and planning, a rate that exceeds other regions in the APAC market. Among the social media platforms, YouTube stands out as the most trusted, with 77% of respondents relying on it for travel recommendations.
However, despite the growing use of social media for planning, there remains a disconnect in how travelers are managing safety and travel risks. Only 35% of Hong Kong travelers use mobile apps for real-time travel alerts and safety advice, falling behind the APAC average of 38%. This gap suggests a need for improved integration of inspiration and practical travel tools, which could help travelers bridge the gap between planning and preparedness.
The Shift Towards Shorter, Spontaneous Getaways
The trend of opting for shorter, more frequent vacations is gaining traction among Hong Kong residents. The survey revealed that the typical Hong Kong getaway now lasts between 5 to 8 days, with travelers allocating a budget of approximately US$1,780—slightly higher than neighboring countries. This shift towards shorter trips aligns with a growing desire for spontaneous travel, with 50% of respondents planning their trips within three months of departure.
Intra-Asia travel remains the most popular choice for Hong Kong travelers, with 50% opting for regional destinations. This trend towards spontaneity means that travelers are more likely to experience last-minute flight delays and luggage issues, with 46% of respondents expressing concern about potential flight disruptions and 40% concerned about baggage-related issues.
Family Travel Gains Momentum
Family travel continues to be a growing trend, with 51% of respondents indicating that they travel with a partner or spouse, and 29% traveling with children. These figures contrast with only 9% of respondents who prefer to travel solo. The data points to a rising preference for family-friendly destinations, accommodations, and activities, aligning with broader trends across the APAC region.
As family travel grows, so does the demand for tailored experiences, especially for those traveling with children. For example, Hong Kong travelers are seeking vacation experiences that offer a mix of relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion—ideal for family bonding and enrichment.
The Increasing Importance of Travel Insurance
With heightened concerns about safety and the rising frequency of travel disruptions, the importance of travel insurance has never been more pronounced. Allianz Partners’ survey shows that 90% of Hong Kong respondents consider travel insurance essential. This reflects a broader trend in the APAC region, where travelers are increasingly aware of the potential risks of traveling and are willing to invest in protecting their trips.
Insurance has become a vital tool in ensuring that travelers feel secure, particularly when facing potential health concerns, extreme weather conditions, or flight disruptions. The Allianz Partners Travel Index 2025 underscores that as travelers become more risk-averse, insurance products will play an increasingly central role in the travel experience.
Hong Kong’s Evolving Travel Landscape: What’s Next?
The Allianz Partners Travel Index 2025 reveals that despite facing financial challenges and rising concerns about safety and health, Hong Kong travelers remain deeply passionate about exploring the world. Their preferences are evolving, with a clear shift towards shorter, more spontaneous trips and a growing reliance on social media for travel inspiration. At the same time, travelers are becoming more conscious of the risks associated with travel, leading to an increased uptake of travel insurance as a necessary safeguard.
As the travel landscape continues to evolve, it is clear that Hong Kong travelers are navigating a new era in travel, one that demands flexibility, security, and the ability to quickly adapt to shifting circumstances. With peak holiday seasons approaching, the demand for both travel and insurance is expected to remain high, presenting opportunities for travel and insurance providers to offer tailored, innovative solutions that meet the changing needs of the modern traveler.
