Recently, author and philanthropist Sudha Murty and renowned nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar shared their insights on food and healthy living in a conversation for Vogue India. During their discussion, Sudha Murty, at 74, revealed her simple approach to food, emphasizing that happiness should be the primary ingredient. She enjoys meals that bring joy, but she consciously avoids high-calorie foods from her dining table.

Sudha also spoke highly of the virtues of “ghar ka khana” (home-cooked food), stating that it’s the best choice for longevity and health. She encouraged people to focus on locally sourced and familiar foods, agreeing with Rujuta, who added that 80 percent of our diet should consist of home-cooked meals. The idea is to appreciate the vast diversity of Indian cuisine, which includes wholesome, nutritious foods that can support overall health.

When it comes to indulging, Sudha Murty shared that she avoids keeping tempting high-calorie foods, like peda, barfi, and Mysore Pak, within reach. She keeps them in a separate place, out of sight, so as to control the temptation. Her approach is all about balance, routine, and mindful eating.

Rujuta Diwekar, in her new book The Commonsense Diet, outlined three key principles for a healthy diet: Combinations, Proportions, and Portions. These are crucial for maintaining a balanced diet, promoting holistic health, and ensuring that food benefits the body. Proper combinations of food, correct proportions of essential nutrients, and mindful portion sizes are vital to avoid overeating and aid digestion.

Their shared wisdom offers simple yet effective ways to incorporate healthier eating habits into everyday life.
