President Trump has told President Zelensky that an American takeover of nuclear power in Ukraine would offer the “best protection” for the country’s infrastructure.
The White House said Trump had “moved beyond” the minerals deal for American companies to extract oil, gas and rare metals that had been proposed as a way to protect Ukraine from future Russian aggression.
That deal was suspended after Zelensky’s disastrous meeting last month with Trump and JD Vance, the vice-president, in the Oval Office. It envisaged US control over natural resources and infrastructure such as ports, but did not mention nuclear power.
