1. “You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon
Written about: Warren Beatty
The identity of the man that “You’re So Vain” was written about has been in question for years. Simon was very reluctant to give up the name, but in 1983, she finally shared, “It certainly sounds like it was about Warren Beatty. He certainly thought it was about him — he called me and said thanks for the song.”
She later confirmed that at least the second verse is about Beatty. “Now, that doesn’t mean that the other two verses aren’t also about Warren. It just means that the second one is.”

Allegedly written about: Britney Spears
The relationship between Timberlake and Spears was one for the headlines — and still is. It’s been known that “Cry Me A River” was written about the end of his relationship with Spears, but recently she shared more information in her memoir, The Woman In Me. “I felt there was no way at the time to tell my side of the story,” Spears wrote. “I couldn’t explain, because I knew no one would take my side once Justin had convinced the world of his version.” Spears wrote her own song about their relationship too, which lasted for three years.
4. “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus
Allegedly written about: Liam Hemsworth
While Cyrus hasn’t confirmed what the real meaning of her hit song, “Flowers” was, it has been speculated to be about ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. However, Cyrus did explain the song’s meaning changed. “It used to be more, like, 1950s. The saddest song. Like: ‘Sure, I can be my own lover, but you’re so much better. The song is a little fake it till you make it. Which I’m a big fan of.”
5. “Hollaback Girl” by Gwen Stefani
Allegedly written about: Courtney Love
Although Stefani never confirmed the song was written about Love, the singer did explain that it was inspired by someone comparing her to a cheerleader. Love did call Stefani a cheerleader in a 2004 interview, saying, “Being famous is just like being in high school. But I’m not interested in being the cheerleader. I’m not interested in being Gwen Stefani. She’s the cheerleader.”
Stefani recalled the song’s inspiration in 2019, explaining, “I was being bullied by someone and was being called a cheerleader, which was a bad thing!”
6. “7 Things” by Miley Cyrus
Allegedly written about: Nick Jonas
“Flowers” wasn’t the first time Cyrus was inspired by a breakup to write a massive hit. In 2008, she wrote “7 Things” about her ex-boyfriend, Nick Jonas, where she listed out the 7 things she hated about him. Of course, she also goes into detail to share the things she loved about him. Cyrus never shared that the song was about Jonas, but she was wearing a diabetes necklace in the music video. This points to him, because he has Type 1 diabetes and is a spokesperson for the disease.
7. “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette
Allegedly written about: Dave Coulier
Morissette never confirmed 100% that “You Oughta Know” was about her ex, Dave Coulier, but he is convinced it is. When Coulier heard the song, he knew from the lyrics that it recapped a few memorable moments between them. He later asked the singer, “ ‘What do you want me to say when people ask me about this relationship?’ And she said, ‘You can say whatever you want.’”
8. “All of Me” by John Legend

Teigen was certain that the smash hit “All of Me” was written about her because of the obvious clues he included. “The first line of it is, ‘What would I do without your smart mouth,’ so if that’s not about me I don’t know what is,” she said.
