8 Coat Trends That Will Dominate Autumn 2025

Prada, Victoria Beckham, Chloé/Launchmetrics Spotlight

This might be controversial to say, but I’m actually looking forward to the temperature dropping here in the UK. From chic knee-high boots to buttery-soft leather separates, I just find that the colder weather just lends itself to a much sleeker style of dressing. And with autumn officially here, I’ve decided that a new coat will be my first purchase of the season.

I must admit, I tend to stick to a more minimal style of dressing when it comes to my actual clothes, so I like to use my outerwear as more trendy pieces that can act as the point of interest in my outfits. For this reason, I decided to browse the autumn/winter 2025 runways in search of on-trend coats that will make my basic outfits feel fresh for the new season. In my search, I found eight new coat trends that strike the perfect balance between elevated, wearable, and classic enough to last in my capsule wardrobe for many years to come.

If you, too, are looking for some outerwear inspiration to help you decide what to invest in for the new season, keep scrolling to discover the coat trends I’ll be buying into for autumn 2025 and beyond.

1. Check

Style Notes: If you’ve already started your new season shopping, you’ve most likely noticed that checks are everywhere this autumn. From plaid midi skirts to argyle knits, the fashion set can’t seem to get enough of this ‘dark academia’-inspired print. I’ll personally be investing in check outerwear like the examples shown by Louis Vuitton, Missoni, and Iceberg, to add some interest to the monochrome base layers of my outfits.

2. Funnel-Neck

Style Notes: If you want your outfits to look thought-out and intentional, look no further than a funnel-neck coat. There’s just something about this high-neck silhouette that looks so elegant and refined. And the best part? The coat will do all of the talking, meaning you can keep the rest of your clothes and accessories super simple. But don’t just take it from me, designers from Victoria Beckham to Valentino are championing this sophisticated coat style for autumn 2025.

3. Fur Collar

Style Notes: Faux fur is definitely not a new trend, but if completely fur coats feel a bit too out-there for you, the runway was filled with fur collars that still incorporate an expensive-looking feel without the full-on drama of an actual fur coat. My favourite is the iteration above from Chloé, but designers like Elie Saab and Rabanne also showcased styles that are just as chic.

Style Notes: Every year, high-end designers manage to find subtle ways to tweak classic outerwear styles to make them feel fresh for the new season. For 2025, this has come in the form of exaggerated silhouettes. From Saint Laurent to Prada, designers found their own unique way to pay homage to this retro trend, proving that you can bring a hint of ‘80s power dressing to your outfit no matter the aesthetic without it feeling too out-there.

5. Animal-Print

Style Notes: As an editor with a more pared-back sense of style, I used to be unconvinced that animal print could look polished. However, there’s just something about an animal-print coat that looks so stylish. The pattern is interesting enough to elevate and outfit, whilst the monochrome hues will allow me to pair it with the neutrals in my wardrobe.

6. Neck-Detailing

Style Notes: Scarf coats have been huge in the past few years, and they’re going nowhere for autumn 2025. However, designers such as Fendi and Sportmax have taken it to the next level by adding even more intricate detailing to adorn the necklines of their coats. This polished silhouette is one that I’ve been seeing across both luxury and high-street stores, meaning you can by into the trend at any price point.

7. Shaggy Fabrics

Style Notes: I’ve already mentioned fur coats above, and although they’re undoubtedly elegant, when fashion people want to look just that little bit cooler, they opt for shaggier, longer-pile faux fur styles to give that ‘grown-out’ more dramatic feel. This trend, adopted by the likes of Michael Kors and Gabriela Hearst, is sure to earn you major ‘cool-girl’ points this autumn.

8. Velvet

Style Notes: Texture arguably plays the biggest role when it comes to intentional autumn dressing, and this year, sumptuous velvet is taking centre stage in outerwear form. I must admit, this is usually a fabric I reserve solely for party season throughout the festive period; however, luxury fashion houses such as Giorgio Armani, Akris, and Weinsanto have convinced me to add it into my outfit rotations as soon as the temperature drops.
