Who isn’t psyched for Diwali? The excitement and anticipation of the festivities often leave us overwhelmed. From visiting your parents to hosting Diwali bashes with friends, at times, there may be insufficient time for rest during Diwali festivities. But not eating well and sleeping enough could negatively affect your health.
When your body doesn’t get enough rest, it won’t be able to cope with the additional stress of the festivities. So, here are some useful tips to balance fun, frolic and rest during Diwali festivities.
7 Useful tips to balance fun and rest during Diwali festivities
1. Avoid eating heavy meals before bedtime
Diwali is the time to eat and drink your heart’s fill! But be careful. Do not indulge in heavy meals right before bedtime. This could disrupt your sleep as you are more prone to having heartburn and acidity because of eating heavy meals before sleeping.
It could also disrupt your digestion function. It is also not recommended to drink plenty of water right before sleeping as you will be making multiple trips to the bathroom.
2. Be mindful of your drinking—alcohol & caffeine, especially
Even though we love to binge-eat and drink during Diwali festivities, we must be mindful of what we consume. It is not uncommon to indulge yourself with occasional binge-drinking sessions with your friends or mindless coffee-and-gossip hour with your siblings during festivals.
But be aware of the quantities and frequencies. Excessive intake of alcohol and caffeine can disrupt your sleep as well as the next day. Don’t end up throwing an entire day of the festival just because you are too hungover or sleep deprived. Moderation is the key to enjoying the festivities.
3. Watch your screen time
We understand that the only time you get to go over the hundreds of selfies with your family and friends is at night. But it may not be the best idea. Spending a lot of time scrolling on your phone before sleeping may interfere with your sleep. Limit your exposure to blue light for uninterrupted sleep and rest during the festivities.
4. Power nap is okay but don’t doze for hours and hours
You may be tempted to take a power nap and rejuvenate yourself before a busy evening of entertaining and socialising. A power nap can help if you are expecting a late night. It can help you recharge and feel refreshed. But dozing off for long hours will leave you wide-eyed and sleepless in the wee hours. Don’t overdo your holiday naps if you want a good shut-eye at night.
5. Don’t skip your workouts
You may not get the time to hit the gym but don’t skip your workouts entirely. If you are expecting a busy day, do some light exercises first thing in the morning. You can also stay active by taking short brisk walks. This can help you get a restful sleep at night.
6. It’s okay to say NO
The default mood of the festivities is to enjoy your heart out with your loved ones. But it is completely okay to skip the late-night events and festivities if you are not feeling rested and up to it. Setting boundaries for your health will only play in your favour.
Don’t let your body and mind suffer for a few hours of fun. Saying NO sometimes is necessary for balancing fun with rest and recovery.
7. Create the optimum bedroom environment to sleep
If you want to get a good sleep, you need to prepare your space accordingly. Ensure that your bedroom environment is ideal for a restful and uninterrupted sleep. Keep the lights dim and make sure you have a comfortable mattress, pillow and a quilt. Switch your electronics off. This could help you get a quality sleep and feel refreshed in the morning.
