If there’s one thing to unite the internet in recent months, it’s heartwarming videos of animals, from wildlife in zoos to man’s best friend.

People across the world have been obsessing over Punch, a baby monkey who captured the hearts of social media users after he was abandoned by his mother and shunned by other monkeys.

Now, a video of seven dogs stolen from their owners is circulating online after allegedly escaping from a truck heading toward a dog meat shop in northern China. The story is reminiscent of the beloved movie Homeward Bound, as the group of dogs sticks together to make their way back to their owners.

A video of the seven stolen dogs shows them walking along a highway as cars pass by. According to the South China Morning Post, the dogs broke free from thieves who were allegedly taking them to a dog meat shop. However, the truck isn’t shown in the video circulating online.

While Shenzhen was the first Chinese city to ban the sale and consumption of dog and cat meat, according to Humane World for Animals, roughly 10 million dogs and 4 million cats are killed each year in China. Following the video’s virality, many users are calling for China to put an end to the dog and cat meat trade.

On March 16, a person in China named Lu recorded the dogs walking along the busy highway in Changchun, Jilin province. The footage showed the dogs surrounding an injured German shepherd, while a Corgi led the pack across the highway. The corgi continued to look back to make sure everyone was following along.

The herd of dogs also included Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and Pekingese. Lu reportedly told a mainland media outlet, “They resemble a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison – nothing like stray dogs.”

Lu shared that he tried to guide the group of dogs to safety, but they continued on without responding to him. He shared the video on the Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin, and called local authorities to rescue the dogs.

Another person shared a video of the dogs wandering in a nearby field, all while sticking together in a heartwarming bond.

What happened to the group of stolen dogs?

The outlet reported that the local Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base shared that the pack of seven dogs comes from the same village and has formed strong bonds. The base sent out volunteers and a drone to track the dogs and ensure they safely make their way home.

One of the volunteers suggested that the dogs were stolen by individuals who operate a dog meat shop, but no witnesses have reported seeing the dogs’ departure.

On March 19, a volunteer told another outlet that all seven dogs had been returned to their respective owners, totaling three different households. The dogs traveled 10.5 miles together from their home village, led by the Corgi pack leader.

People on social media say this story sounds like a ‘movie plot’

Users on Reddit are sharing their reactions to the brave group of seven dogs who escaped from thieves, writing, “This could be disney’s new flim.”

Another on X similarly wrote, “Seven dogs said ‘not today’ and turned into a full movie plot.” Someone else wrote, “Remind me of Homeward Bound.”

“This corgi is a true hero and leader; he led the whole group at the pace of his injured friend so as not to leave him behind,” another person commented.
