I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but let’s face it: Summer is nearly over. I, too, enjoyed the excuse to wear my basic tees and tanks to the office. But time is ticking, and soon enough, we’ll have to swap out our off-season attire for sweaters and more.
While fall weather can have its cons, these cozy and versatile apparel items are a huge pro for the season in our book. Your favorite cardigan can be thrown over your shoulders or layered over a basic tee, and those viral slip-on sherpa slippers are totally acceptable to wear outside your home. That’s what makes fall attire way cooler.
Specifically, fall 2025 fashion will see some familiar trends from previous seasons, and also some new ones. Stylist Jasmine Snow stopped by the 3rd hour of TODAY to share a few fall fashion trends that you can expect, including the classic Mary Jane shoe, slouchy handbags and denim dresses, to name a few. You may already own these picks, or they might give you an excuse to try some new ones.
While summer isn’t over yet, now is the time to start shopping for fall. Keep reading to discover these expert-recommended fall 2025 fashion trends.
Trends: Lightweight knitwear and Mary Janes or Oxford shoes
“Knitwear is a super seasonal trend — according to Google, there’s already been an increase in searches for knit sweaters over the last month,” explains Snow, so you’ll want to start searching for lightweight knitwear to easily transition into a new season with.
To pair with any of your fall attire, including our suggested picks below, is a classic Mary Jane and Oxford shoe. “Searches for these styles are on the rise — in fact, according to Pinterest, we’re seeing increased interest in classic prep attire, with search terms like ‘preppy vibes’ seeing a +5,597% increase over the last year!” the stylist adds.
For when the weather is brisk, throw on this 100% cotton Quince cardigan to bundle up in. Wear it on its own, over a basic or over your shoulders. It’s that versatile!
Mary Janes and Oxford-style shoes were all the rage last year, but we will see them return for fall, such as the style above. Why? Mary Janes are not just a pretty shoe — they’re highly supportive for all-day wear.
Plus, Snow specifically loves the leopard print (a year-long trending print) because it can be treated just like a neutral. “You can easily pair it with every outfit and it will give it just the right pop of fun,” she suggests.

For the days when you don’t know what to wear, this affordable pullover sweater will instantly elevate the most casual outfits. At select colors under $25, you may want to grab multiple shades for endless styling.
Because a fancy shoe can be wearable, the brand says these Dr. Scholl’s Oxford shoes have anti-microbial and anti-odor Insole Technology, along with added support and cushioning for comfort in every step. Snow notes that chocolate brown is a popular color that can easily fit with any outfit.

Trend: Denim dresses
“A denim dress is the ultimate ‘throw on and go’ piece,” claims Snow. “It solves the morning outfit puzzle because you don’t have to overthink — and works from office to a night out!”
Denim also never goes out of style, Snow tells us, but for fall, dark denim has seen an increase in search interest.
We loved Old Navy’s new fall denim line (see our review here!), so we can trust that this highly versatile denim dress from the brand boasts the same impressive quality.
“Heels and jewelry make it going out ready, but loafers, sneakers or flat boots make it daytime casual,” Snow recommends for styling. “You can also throw on a sweater as the weather cools down. It’s one piece, multiple outfits.”
Trend: Slouchy handbags
Say goodbye to the micro-bags. Slouchy bags are here to stay! “Oversized slouchy handbags are chic and practical…. finally a trend that lets you carry everything without sacrificing style,” Snow explains. “According to Google Trends, we’ve seen a huge increase in searches for slouchy bags over the last year — with suede slouchy bags as the most searched style.”
This Gap Bucket Bag can be taken from work to after work without missing a beat. The faux suede fabric makes it timeless for fall and beyond, while the large size makes it convenient for holding essentials.
“Suede is super popular as we move into fall — we’re starting to see it everywhere,” Snow emphasizes. It is also easier to style than one might expect. For instance, “Pairing jeans with neutral accessories means you can re-wear all of these pieces endlessly,” adds the stylist, but the suede fabric helps add some dimension to a basic look.
Styled with:
Trend: Cropped jeans
“Wide leg and relaxed jeans are even more popular for fall — and the cropped version gives the best of both worlds,” says Snow. “They have all the comfort of a wide leg jean, with the style of the cropped hem to show off your shoes and keep hems from dragging — no pricey trips to the tailor!”
These high-rise jeans are so flattering, they’re a top-rated pair on Anthropologie. They have a form-fitting waist (with a hidden, adjustable elastic, might we add), true wide leg, and a cropped hem for easy styling and wear.
And now through August 31, Anthropologie is offering 30% off on these jeans with the exclusive code TODAY.

Trend: Light fall jackets (or barn jackets)
“The jacket that layers with everything,” claims Snow. “A lightweight barn jacket bridges summer to fall. It’s less bulky than a coat but warmer than a cardigan, so you’re covered for unpredictable temps.”
“Think of a jacket as your styling secret weapon,” recommends Snow. “A structured shape like this helps even basic leggings and a tee get an upgrade…A fall jacket makes your wardrobe feel fresh for a new season without needing an entirely new closet.”

You can always count on a pair of black leggings to be a fall trend that never goes out of style. They can be styled with oversized sweaters, shackets, boots and more.
Clogs have been making a comeback, and we’re excited to see this classic option from American Eagle reclaim its spot in our fall wardrobes. This option is embellished with gold-tone studs for an elevated look.
Our team loves extra-large bags, per our recent coverage of the trend, for carrying our work essentials to everyday must-haves. And there’s no doubt we will be carrying them throughout the fall, too.
For instance, associate editor Lauren Witonsky says this Amazon find feels and looks more luxurious than it is. “[It’s also] super spacious (but still has a slip pocket and keychain to stay organized), and I love all of the fall colors,” she raves.
This high-neck sweater screams “ready for fall” with the colorblock pattern of autumnal hues. You can dress it up with a midi skirt or pair it with your favorite trendy jeans.
Speaking of trendy denim, these jeans from Old Navy have that ultra-wide-leg silhouette and a high waist that will look flattering on any body type.
This utility jacket will give an ultra-chic touch to any outfit. It’s made with faux suede and can be layered with dresses, skirts or casual jeans.
From work to everyday wear, elevate any outfit with a classic penny loafer. Aside from jeans and trousers, we’ve seen many fashionistas style the shoe with tights, skirts and dresses.
Fall is all about elevated comfort, and these jeans are made from organic cotton, lyocell tencel and spandex, so expect them to be extremely soft and stretchy. You’ll feel ultra cozy when they’re paired with your favorite layers.
Throughout the summer, I [San Miguel] saw variations of the poncho, including some with fridge or crochet materials. I imagine the poncho will continue in the fall, but with thicker fabrics for when the weather is brisk, but not too brisk for a jacket.
Quince offers a 100% Grade-A Mongolian cashmere version (meaning it’s more durable and warmer, per the brand) to throw on and instantly feel together. The fabric feels luxurious, and doesn’t make me feel overheated when layered over a t-shirt. I could even see myself wearing it into the winter for a lighter layer over a long sleeve.
