MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Breast cancer awareness has been going on all October and Hillsdale Community Center is capping off the month in style.
Dress up… Dress down… But whatever you do — wear pink! And that’s exactly what they were doing at the Hillsdale Community Center — promoting their “50 Shades of Pink Fashion & Talent Show.”
“Hey — I love doing this — I love strutting and showing off,” said Mary Lee, Hillsdale Community Center Senior Manager.
Diamonds, denim, and pearls never looked so good!!!
“We are all divas and we are very excited! Lee: We got some divas in the house! — Yes, we do! 86 Years old! — Lee: I don’t believe it! So, will you ladies be performing or just modeling? — Modeling. — Lee: Of course. You’re all models! — Yes, we are — we are models and divas. I love that word diva! — Lee: You’re living that diva life! — Yes I am!!! Yes, we are,” said a group of ladies modeling in the fashion show.
We also heard from breast cancer survivors and a rendition of Amazing Grace before the next round of models took over the runway.
“Well, I’m at 68 years now and I just learned how to hoola hoop about a year ago. — Lee: oh, you just learned. — Yes, about a year ago. — Lee: I’m impressed. — Okay, thank you — I appreciate it! — A lot of fun for a great cause,” said Rylanda Robinson, who hoola hooped down the runway.
Men also put on their best — helping drive home the message breast cancer does not just target women.
“I’m from the Connie Hudson Community Center over on Hillcrest. — Lee: Well, you came over here and showed them how it was done! — Right! That’s right! — Lee: I saw you take that jacket off — and they started screaming! — That’s right! That’s the way to do it,” said one man.
Now in its 6th year — it’s a fun event for an even greater cause — and one they’re proud continues to grow year after year.
“They love it! Every year gets bigger. First year we started off small… And every year we are going bigger and bigger. And next year we are going to be even bigger,” said Mary Lee.
And a few lucky attendees walked away winners as door prizes were given out.
