5-vehicle crash on Hong Kong highway injures 6, causes temporary lane closures

Five vehicles crashed into each other on one of Hong Kong’s busiest highways on Thursday, leaving six people injured and all lanes bound for urban areas closed temporarily.

Police said the six passengers and drivers sustained slight injuries in the crash that involved three private cars and two trucks on Tolo Highway in Tai Po at 11.30am.

According to videos posted online, one of the trucks involved had its body badly damaged and lay across three lanes, while one private car was hit by another truck and was squeezed between it and the highway fence.

The Transport Department around noon that all Tolo Highway’s Kowloon-bound lanes near Seaview Villas were closed due to the traffic accident. It later said that some lanes were open again at around 1pm.

All the Kowloon-bound lanes were reopened at around 2.15pm as the scene was cleared.

But the department said the traffic congestion would take time to disperse as the queue went to Fanling Highway near Kau Lung Hang. The distance between the accident site and Kau Lung Hang is about 15km (9.3 miles).
