With the new Apple Original film F1 racing into theaters this weekend, we’re learning quite a bit about how this high-octane project came to life. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and shot by cinematographer Claudio Miranda, who previously worked on Top Gun: Maverick together, pushed the envelope further than ever before in terms of high-speed cinematography and blazing fast visuals.
And while a lot of focus of the cinematography will be on the unique camera setups and IMAX-sized effects, Miranda has actually shared some interesting insights into the use of the custom-made iPhone 15 Pros and smartphone apps that helped him shoot the film and assist in his cinematography process.
Let’s look at some of the apps Miranda cites as crucial to his cinematography work on F1.
F1 Cinematographer Claudio Miranda’s Essential Apps
In a recent interview with the Apple Apple Store, Claudio Miranda talks about how several apps he likes to use support his instincts and are steadily becoming better tools to help supercharge his creative process. These apps, Miranda shares, helped him “move quickly without compromising the image,” in the filmmaking process.
The apps which Miranda cites as ones that helped to power F1 include:
- Artemis for visualizing shots and aligning with production designers
- Sun Surveyor for mastering light at ever-shifting locations, these tools are essential to his workflow
- pCAM for depth of field and field-of-view calculations
- Polycam to quickly map out raceways and equipment placements
- PIX System to review dailies and maintain continuity.
Miranda also cites the Blackmagic Camera app for iPhones as another tool which he and his team used. Miranda even further shares that the Blackmagic Camera app was used to help film a last-minute shot with Brad Pitt at Daytona that was good enough to be included in the final trailer for the film.
