A number of new transport rules will take effect on March 1 to keep Hong Kong on par with global standards, including some on remote-control parking and others that will ease restrictions on what visual display units can show inside vehicles, authorities have said.
The Transport Department said on Sunday that the four major rules and other technical amendments would affect drivers of both private cars and heavy vehicles.
“The various new requirements aim to provide convenience to the public, enhance road safety, and promote the application and development of new automotive technologies in Hong Kong, keeping up with the international vehicle construction and maintenance standards,” a department spokesman said.
The new rules will allow drivers to use mobile phones or other devices to park under specified conditions. The department will set technical requirements for remote-control parking systems to ensure safety.
Vehicles can only use systems approved by the government.
Car dealers and importers will have to submit individual applications to the Transport Department for vehicles already equipped with remote-control parking systems.
From Saturday onwards, non-driving-related information can be shown on visual displays inside parked vehicles.
