SALT LAKE CITY — Trends are fun, but they aren’t for everyone. Casey Matheny is a professional stylist whose job is to help women look current and feel confident. There are three fall fashion trends she is skipping this season, and for good reason!
“I say choose your trends wisely, and base off of ones that fit your current aesthetic already,” Matheny emphasized.
Lace Layering: Been There, Done That
One trend Matheny is passing on this season is lace layering. She explained that lace isn’t inherently bad, but she believes it’s better suited for younger generations.
“Us who have already done this trend … pass it,” she said.
Instead, she recommended trying a silk blouse.
“Do a beautiful silk blouse that can go under a jacket or a cardigan,” Matheny said. “It’s going to look elevated and it’s going to look current, but it’s not gonna be trendy.”

Zebra Print: Too Harsh for Some Complexions
Zebra print is another trend Matheny is skipping. She said any age can wear this trend, but for it to work well, it comes down to coloring.
“For me and you, we have a more muted coloring, more muted complexion,” she explained. “So this really hard contrast of black and white, it’s going to look too severe on us.”
As an alternative, Matheny suggested leopard print.
“It has more muted tones,” she explained. “It’s just going to let us wear it instead of the opposite.”

Corporate Shoulders: Not for Every Body Type
The third trend Matheny is avoiding is the “corporate shoulder” look, also known as “corp core.” You’ll typically see strong, wide shoulders in blazers with this trend. This style can be flattering for some, but overwhelming for others.
“If you have a body shape where you are more triangular … that’s gonna help balance your wider hips,” she said. “But for me where I’m already broad on top, I don’t want to accentuate that more.”
Instead, she recommended blazers with softer shoulders and fabrics or cropped jackets.
“It’s just realizing what looks best on me and saying yes or no to those trends,” Matheny said.
