1 more death, another 30 Hong Kong cases tied to outbreak of fish-linked infection

Hong Kong has recorded one more death and another 30 infections linked to a citywide outbreak of a Group B Streptococcus strain related to contact with raw freshwater fish.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said on Friday that the 30 new cases logged in the past four days involved 16 men and 14 women, aged between 36 and 95, adding that the patients mainly suffered from sepsis and joint abscesses.

They tested positive for ST283, or serotype III sequence type 283, after being admitted to hospital with Group B Streptococcus infections.

The cases brought the number of infections to 70 since last month, with all patients showing symptoms before September 10.

Three patients are in a serious condition in hospital, 45 are stable and 19 have been discharged. Another patient with underlying illnesses died, the CHP said in its latest update, bringing the number of fatalities to three.
