One person died early Friday afternoon when a westbound semi-truck pulling a trailer left the Kansas Turnpike on its north side and struck a bridge pillar in eastern Shawnee County, the Kansas Turnpike Authority reported.
The victim’s name, age and gender were not being made public pending notification of next of kin.
Kansas Highway Patrol troopers and rescue workers were called about 12:20 p.m. to the scene of the crash, which occurred where the turnpike passes beneath a bridge at S.E. Stubbs Road near its mile marker 187.
The highway patrol was investigating circumstances of the crash.
The KTA indefinitely closed that bridge, and through traffic wasn’t being allowed on Stubbs between S.E. US-40 highway and S.E. 29th Street, said Amanda Monhollon, public information officer for Shawnee County.
No signed detour will be provided for Stubbs Road traffic, Monhollon said.
