Xavi confirms desire to return to coaching: ‘Why not manage another La Liga side?’

Former Barcelona head coach Xavi says he would be open to managing another La Liga side in the future.

Xavi spent 17 years in the Barcelona first team as a player, winning 25 trophies, before leaving for Qatari side Al Sadd in 2015. After retiring from playing in 2019, the Spaniard then coached Al Sadd for two years before returning to Barcelona in November 2021, replacing Ronald Koeman as head coach. Xavi’s Barcelona won La Liga in the 2022-23 season but he left the club at the end of the following campaign.

Speaking to France Football, via AS, Xavi confirmed he is keen to return to management after his exit from Barcelona last May.

“I don’t have anything established in my future, I have an open mind,” the 45-year-old said. “Why not manage another La Liga side? I’m open to listening to offers. I’m looking for an exciting project and I have the ambition to win titles. That’s my goal.

“I like to see teams which play nice football and treat the ball well. Managers such as Pep Guardiola, Arne Slot at Liverpool, Kompany at Bayern … but I also like watching championships such as the Qatari, Saudi Arabian or Portuguese leagues.

“I want my players to have fun, perform an attractive football style for their fans and finally to win trophies. I want to win the Champions League, the Euros, the World Cup.”

After finishing second and 10 points behind La Liga winners Real Madrid last year under Xavi, Barcelona are top of the league with Hansi Flick at the helm this season. With 26 games played, Flick’s side have a one-point advantage over second-placed Madrid and are three ahead of third-placed Atletico Madrid.
